The Nigerian Association of Tour Operators (NATOP) held its 7th Annual General Meeting and Conference at the prestigious Bimbo Owolabi Hall of Afe Babalola University, Ekiti State.
The event brought together industry experts, tour operators, and stakeholders who emphasized the need to recognize the economic value generated by the tourism sector and called for increased government involvement to support its growth.
During the conference, the National President of NATOP – Ime Udo, in her address to the attendees, stressed the crucial role tour operators play in driving economic value both domestically and internationally. She highlighted the importance of understanding the significant contributions made by tour operators in bringing together various products, such as airlines, resorts, tour sites, and destinations.
“We need to change the narrative and raise awareness about the economic value that the tourism sector brings,” the National President expressed passionately. “It should not be business as usual; we must establish partnerships and advocate for increased government involvement in the tourism sector. By placing tourism at the forefront, the government can support tour operators in generating substantial revenue.”
The highlight of the Annual General Meeting was the call for the establishment of a dedicated Ministry of Tourism. The National President emphasized that Nigeria is abundantly blessed with tourism potentials, offering numerous opportunities for economic benefits through its diverse range of tourism resources. With a dedicated ministry, the government can provide better infrastructure, policies, and support to foster the growth of the tourism industry.
The event provided an opportunity for networking and fostering strong business relationships among participants. The National President stressed the importance of collaboration, stating, “By collectively contributing to the development of a robust and thriving tourism sector, we can ensure sustainable growth for the Nigerian tourism industry.”
Furthermore, the Annual General Meeting served as a platform to showcase the diverse and unique aspects of Nigeria’s culture. Through leveraging events and occasions like the AGM, the country aims to attract both domestic and international tourists, thus boosting tourism revenue.
