The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has announced the temporary closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State due to urgent runway rehabilitation works.
The decision follows the discovery of a sudden and severe rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway.
According to a statement released by FAAN, the emergency repairs will take place from April 22 to May 6, 2025, during which time the runway will be completely unavailable for flight operations.
“In line with civil aviation safety regulations, we have had to close the runway to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. No takeoffs or landings will occur while the rehabilitation is ongoing,” said Mrs. Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection.
All flights originally scheduled to land at or depart from Akanu Ibiam International Airport will be rerouted to nearby airports for the duration of the repair period.
FAAN has appealed to passengers, airlines, and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the short notice. The agency reiterated its commitment to passenger safety and the ongoing upgrade of airport infrastructure nationwide.
