South African Airways (SAA) is preparing for a leadership transition with an interim chief executive expected to take charge following the resignation of CEO John Lamola, who will step down in the coming weeks.

According to aerotime.aero, the development places the airline among a growing number of global carriers experiencing executive changes amid shifting industry dynamics.

SAA confirmed on April 10, 2026, that Lamola had resigned after serving in multiple leadership roles within the organisation. He joined the airline in July 2021 as a non-executive director and board chair before assuming the CEO position in May 2022, guiding the carrier through a critical post-restructuring phase.

South Africa’s Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy, acting as shareholder representative, commended Lamola for his contributions to the national carrier, highlighting his role in stabilising and repositioning the airline.

Echoing the sentiment, SAA Board Chairperson Sedzani Mudau described Lamola’s tenure as instrumental in rebuilding the airline’s operations and restoring confidence in the brand.

“Professor Lamola has played a pivotal role in rebuilding South African Airways and positioning it for sustained success. His leadership during a complex and demanding period has left a lasting and positive legacy on the organisation,” Mudau stated.

While details of the interim leadership arrangement are yet to be fully disclosed, the transition is expected to ensure operational continuity as the airline charts its next phase of growth and consolidation.
