One of the leading African Airlines Kenya Airways reached a milestone when it introduced the most technologically advanced Aircraft that flies within the African continent to Lagos on the 4th of June 2014. The brand new B777-300 series aircraft wowed the passengers from Lagos when they boarded. It was some experience to use their laptops on board via a cable and wifi available on board. The height of the experience was watching live TV at 40000 feet above sea level. For most of the passengers it is a case of smart Plane smart Airline.
KQ TV as it is now called has positioned the airline for the future as an advanced airline competing in the area of service.
According to the Airline it has revamped its inflight entertainment experience with the introduction of a new inflight television service dubbed KQ TV.
The service will allow passengers watch live News and Sports channels while onboard, in a move that will set Kenya Airways apart from some of its competitors in the continent and beyond.
The launch of this new service takes cue from the decision by the airline to rebrand and revamp their cabin product in the newly acquired B777-300 and B787 fleets.
The introduction of the B787 Dreamliner has produced the First Lady captain in the world award winning Capt. Irene Mutungi.
“With the ongoing introduction of new and modern fleet of aircraft, we aim to complement the experience with an inflight entertainment service that will give our passengers an innovative new way to enjoy live entertainment content while on board,” Said Kenya Airways Group Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer Dr. Titus Naikuni.
He noted that the effort to improve the in-flight entertainment experience for their passengers is consistent with the airlines commitment to providing a world-class experience to its customers across the airlines network of 64 destinations.
Kenya Airways has already embarked on its second phase of its fleet expansion and modernization which saw the airline receive two 777-300ER and a 787 Dreamliner with five more expected by the end of the year. The acquisition of these aircraft is expected to pave way for the introduction of new intercontinental flights and increasing the frequency on existing routes.
For those of us on the inaugural flight from Lagos to Nairobi it was fun having to use your Laptops and tablets without having to switch off as usual. On board the inaugural was the Nigerian minister of Tourism Edem Duke his permanent secretary and the DG of Nihotours along with other officials.
The Nigerian team including media and travel agents were received the Jomo Kenyatta international Airport by the Nigerian Ambassador to Kenya Ayo Oyateru.
The Nigerian team were taken to Kenya Airwys Pride center by the Airport were the pilots,Engineers and Cabin crew are trained.
The Nigerian team was taken on a game drive to the Nairobi National park smack in the city of Nairobi and spent the evening at the world famous Carnivore Restaurant. The minister of Tourism from Nigeria was hosted by the Kenyan secretary of Tourism.
On 6th of June the Nigerian team were received at the airport with Kenyan dancers carrying Nigerian and Kenyan flags to flag off the first flight to Abuja from Nairobi. Speeches were made by the Ministers of Tourism from Nigeria,his Kenyan counterpart and the Kenyan Minister of Transport Engr. Kamau.
Nigeria’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Chief Edem Duke, and his Kenyan counterpart in the transport ministry on Friday appealed to the local media to avoid stories that could denigrate Africa.
Both ministers spoke at a reception on the inaugural Kenya Airways direct flight between Nairobi and Abuja at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.
Duke said the advice to the local media in both countries to exercise restraint in their reportage was occasioned by the current security challenges confronting Nigeria and Kenya.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that security forces from both countries are currently engaged in military operations against terrorists in their territories.
Duke said, “We must change the narratives about our two countries, the narratives about the challenges in Kenya and the narratives about the challenges in Nigeria.
“We must make the warmth and the hospitality of our people, the assets that nature has endowed us with, the stories of positivity, the achievements of our leaders, those must be the stories we convey to the world.”
On the introduction of the direct flight, the Nigerian minister said it “would open windows and wide doors of opportunities for businesses to enhance trade, commerce and people to people relationship.”
“It is a flight of a new hope, the hope of a new and enterprising relationship between the biggest economy in Africa and the most vibrant economy in east Africa.”
The Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Transport of Kenya, Mr. Michael Kamau, said the African media must not join those “stripping naked our countries.”
“If you find that your parents are naked, you don’t tell the world to pay attention to their nakedness.
“Let’s put back the clothes on Africa.
“For a long time, Africa has been dressed down; was dressed down culturally and economically and we cannot at this stage after 50 years of independence in Africa take over from where the others left.”
On bilateral relations between Nigeria and Kenya, Kamau said both countries had recently signed a number of agreements on trade and agriculture.
