A delegation comprising the political and economic team of the Belgium Embassy in Nigeria, alongside the ambassadors of Denmark, Italy and Spain, last Saturday visited Lokoja in Kogi State to explore the historic confluence of the Rivers Niger and Benue, while underscoring the economic importance of reviving inland water transportation in Nigeria.

The visit to the iconic meeting point of the two rivers offered the European diplomats a firsthand experience of one of Nigeria’s most historically significant landmarks. The confluence, widely regarded as symbolic in Nigeria’s national identity and featured prominently on the coats of arms of many federal institutions, is also linked to the origin of the country’s name, “Nigeria,” which was reportedly coined from the vantage point overlooking the rivers.

During the tour, the diplomats observed the striking visual contrast between the waters of the Niger and Benue rivers, whose differing sediment concentrations create distinct colours and a visible dividing line on the water’s surface before eventually merging downstream.

The delegation also highlighted the strategic economic importance of making the River Niger fully navigable from the Atlantic Ocean to Lokoja, noting that such a development could significantly strengthen Nigeria’s transport and logistics network. According to the team, European and Belgian technical expertise could play an important role in supporting efforts to restore the inland waterway corridor.

The visiting diplomats expressed appreciation to the National Inland Waterways Authority and the Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District for facilitating the navigation experience and showcasing the natural beauty and economic potential of the area.
