Following increased arrest of Ghanaians at the Dubai International Airport, in United Arab Emirates, the Ghanaian Consulate has advised its citizens to desist from assisting nationals in transporting their parcel to the Middle East country.
The consulate stated that already five people have been arrested in Dubai between January and March 2021 adding that one person has also been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
“The Consulate General of Ghana in Dubai wishes to announce for the information of all Ghanaians in the UAE that it has, in recent times received information about some arrests of person at the Dubai International Airport trying to traffic marijuana (Weed) into the UAE.
The sad part of it is that, all the parcels containing the weed were given to them by the agents in Ghana who acquired the UAE Visa for them, with instructions to give the parcels to their counterpart agents in the UAE on arrival. It is also interesting to know that the weed is normally hidden in food items.
“It may also interest you to know that currently all the five people are in detention. One of them has since been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, probably for carrying weed he was not aware of and weed that someone else would have benefitted from.
“In this regard, the Consulate General wishes to advise everyone who has relative coming from Ghana to Dubai to inform them never to take any message/parcel from agents or any other person to Dubai except if they can inspect and ascertain the true content of the message/parcel.
