The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) recorded ₦1.95 billion in passenger revenue during the first quarter of 2025, marking a 37 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The report highlights steady growth in rail transport earnings, reflecting increased patronage and improved service operations across major routes.
According to hecable.ng , in its rail transportation data report released on October 5, NBS said the figure shows an increase of 37.36 percent from the N1.42 billion recorded in the same quarter of the previous year.
“In terms of revenue generation, N1.95 billion was received from passengers during the reference period, showing an increase of 37.36% from the N1.42 billion recorded in the same quarter of the previous year,” the bureau said.
According to the report, a total of 929,553 passengers travelled through the rail system in Q1 2025, representing a 37.65 percent increase from 675,293 passengers recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2024.
The bureau said the volume of goods and cargos transported stood at 181,520 tons compared to 160,650 tons recorded in Q1 2024.
NBS also said N657.03 million was received from goods and cargos conveyed, up by 8.19 percent from N607.32 million in Q1 2024.
“In addition, Other receipts amounted to N115.68 million, indicating an increase of 355.39% in Q1 2025 from the N25.40 million received in Q1 2024,” the NBS added.
‘RAIL SYSTEM RECORDED 1M PASSENGERS IN Q4 2024’
In Q4 2024, the report said the rail system recorded 1,037,113 passengers, representing a 54.29 percent increase from the 672,198 passengers transported in the same quarter of 2023.
The bureau said the volume of goods and cargos transported during the reference period stood at 94,750 tons compared to 119,286 tons recorded in Q4 2023.
“In terms of revenue generation, N1.92billion was received from passengers in Q4 2024, higher than N1.07 billion recorded in the same quarter of the previous year,” the statistics firm said.
“Similarly, N391.64 million was received from goods/cargos conveyed in Q4 2024, down by 7.46% when compared to N423.22 million in Q4 2023.
“A total of N8.93 million was collected for transporting 1,260 tons of goods through pipeline during the quarter.”
The NBS said other receipts rose to N434.44 million, reflecting a 10.34 percent increase from the N393.72 million recorded in Q4 2023.
