In a heartfelt message addressed to members of the World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism), Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili expressed deep disappointment over the unexpected withdrawal of support for his re-election by his home country, Georgia.
The announcement, he said, came without prior dialogue or explanation and undermines both his legacy and Georgia’s credibility on the global stage.
Pololikashvili, who has led UN Tourism for eight years, described the move as “a cold gesture” that disrespects the professional and diplomatic efforts he has made on behalf of his country. More troubling, he noted, is the delay in communication: while the Georgian Prime Minister signed the withdrawal letter on May 6, it was not transmitted until May 14 — a lapse he called “unusual” and lacking transparency.
Despite the setback, the Secretary-General reaffirmed his commitment to global tourism and the values of peace, integrity, and accountability. He thanked the international community for their continued support, especially the 80% of member states who backed his leadership during the 25th General Assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
“To my country, I can only say this: even with a wounded heart, I will continue to work for a fairer, more open and humane world,” he concluded.
“I am deeply saddened that my country-my Georgia-has chosen to support another candidature, disregarding the journey and the values that I have sought to represent as a Georgian before the world, committed to strengthening global tourism with an ethical and responsible vision.
“Nevertheless, I remain confident that the international community will recognize the track record, principles, and commitment that have guided my leadership of UN Tourism. Today, more than ever, I continue to believe in peace, in integrity and in the value of one’s word.
“To all those who have accompanied me on this journey, and who have stood by me during these eight years, sharing in challenges and successes alike, I offer my deepest gratitude. Your support-especially during the 25th
“General Assembly of UN Tourism held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, in October 2023, where 80% of the Members expressed their support for this project-meant more to me than words can express.
“To my country, I can only say this: even with a wounded heart, I will continue to work for a fairer, more open and humane world.” He said.
