Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeugo is more popular as Rev. King. His brutal nature was common knowledge. Former members of his Christian Praying Assembly (CPA) affirmed this in their numerous testimonies against him. ISIOMA MADIKE in this report attempts to recapture some of his weird performances that turned him into a tragic jester of sort. Rev. King , who at a time called himself Jesus Christ, came to a climax when he was handed a death penalty six years ago. His fate now dangles between the hangman’s nooses. The holy book had predicted the emergence of those who would profess to be “God” themselves.
King, also known as “His Holiness,” “Most Honourable”, Rev. (Dr.) Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, perfectly fits into this prophecy. The bearded General Overseer of Christian Praying Assembly (CPA) has his church at Ajao Estate. He is controversial. Some call him tragic comedian. Others believe he is much more than that. However, his journey to perdition started on July 22, 2006, when he allegedly set seven of his followers on fire after bathing them with petrol for unproven sin of fornication. His victims were Ann Uzor, Olisa Chiejina, Onuorah Chizoba, Vivian Ezeocha, Uchechukwu Iwoba, Kosisochukwu Henry and Nwere Jessica. Many, including pathologists, who linked the death of one of the victims, Ann, few days after the horror to the unkind gesture of King, were and are still in shock over such a weird behaviour from a supposed man of God. Jesus, the Christ, could not have done that in His days. The Bible recalled that Christ granted prerogative of mercy to an adulterous woman. It could have been worse in Christ’s time as penalty for such was death by stoning. King was first detained at the Ikoyi Prisons from where he was moved to Kuje and later transferred to Sokoto Prisons. His trial was as comical as the man himself. Prosecution witnesses, who were mostly his church members, revealed what was never in public domain.
They narrated how King turned them to sex toys. Kelechi, who was the principal witness in the matter, recounted what appalled even the presiding judge. It was a disgusting account, to say the very least. “I aborted four pregnancies for the selfacclaimed ‘god’,” she told the court. She did not stop there. Kelechi said she denounced her family and attended to King naked while performing her function as his maid. Other witnesses equally painted gory pictures of what transpired in the “kingdom” of hell. They confirmed the fact that King actually set them on fire by pouring fuel on them. “King gathered us together in his house following allegations that we were committing fornication, a crime we never committed,” they chorused. Another, Chiejina, told the court how King operated a “Lord Army”, an outfit he said the CPA G.O. used to intimidate and harass members of his church. He took this bravado to the prison. He was said to have conducted church service at a point through telephone from his prison abode. Little wonder, he was treated specially.
Indeed, King enjoyed privileges as a condemned prisoner, according to prison sources. This may be why other prisoners were angered and revolted against the authorities; they even protested. There was an unconfirmed report also that he was moved to Kastina Prisons for organising prayer sessions for devotees and causing undue tension while at the Kaduna Prisons. Another unverified source claimed that “the man is just too influential among his adherents. We see different people, both high and low class, visit him for prayers. The prison officials became uncomfortable with this and decided to move King to where nobody can see him.” While still at the custody of the anti-robbery squad of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti in Lagos, King, according to the police, exuded the arrogance of an emperor. Some of his church members scrambled to touch him. Showing no evidence of remorse, the man was once spotted inside Panti Police Station at the time in company with a female member of his church. This, however, led to a mild drama same day outside the station when he was brought out of his cell for a brief moment.
Vivian, one of the victims that escaped the fire was seen crying while walking hand-in-hand with the bearded pastor. The scene attracted prompt condemnation from relations and friends of the fire victims as well as other members of the church who thronged the station in solidarity with the victims. When asked why she had to shed tears for the pastor who set them on fire, Vivian said: “I was shocked and still can’t explain.” Also at the police station, an army of protesting church members who alleged all manner of abuse by the controversial pastor swamped the premises of the SCID, Panti. They volunteered statements to the police on past injustices suffered in the hands of King. They equally disclosed that King had commit-ted many atrocities in the past. “The fire case only exposed the whole secret. King is an epitome of all the evil acts he preached for members. We did not know what was happening then. In fact, we commenced church service from seven in the morning till sometimes eight in the night. And you will be carried away by his preaching,” one of them said. Yet, there are some diehard followers of King who never saw anything wrong in his actions. Chidozie King is one of such people. He is the one who claimed that it was the media that condemned their “Jesus”.
According to him, journalists never looked at the other side of King’s story to establish the truth. He traced King’s troubles to a man, who, he claimed was a cult member whose wife did not want to follow his evil ways. “She decided to stick to the church that had delivered her from bondage. From that time the man left the church, he started hatching evil plot against Rev. King and the church. He secretly started recruiting some members in the church and promised to give them N2 million each as well as send them to South Africa,” Chidozie affirmed. He continued: “Long before the incident, one Sunday, in the course of his message, G.O. said, there were some people plotting evil against him and advised them not to waste their time because there is no movement they would make that he would not know.” Rev King, Chidozie said, is beyond human. “That is what people failed to understand. What caused the problem was that most people don’t know who Rev. King is. When Jesus came and said He was the Messiah, people started hating Him as they are doing to Rev. King. They were looking for ways to nail them, and in a way to please the people.
“Nostradamus mentioned Rev. King in his prophesies, and according to Ian Wilson in the Biography of Nostradamus in Century 10, pages 72 to 74 (Century is like a chapter), it reads the year 1999, seven months, from sky will come a great king to bring back to life to the great Mongols… to reign by goodluck. “Then in the analysis, the Nostradamus scholars said, from the sky will come a great appeaser king, and the year is 1999. He gave the prophesies about 500 years ago. We, the CPA members know that extraordinary thing happened in 1999 and exactly the seventh month was when the ministry of Rev. King came into existence; CPA as a church was born in July 1999. We now match it with what the book says about the great King and appeaser King.” In like manner, another loyalist of King, Emeka Dimaka King, also claimed that Rev. King is the Christ that has come for the second time. According to him, the church is not disturbed over the ordeal of their leader as he would come out glorious. “The church has not for one day prayed for him. How can you pray for God? The only thing we do is thank God for his life. Nobody has prayed for him. On February 26, Supreme Court judgement, God knows what to do and no human being will take the glory, it is God,” they both declared. But now that King’s death sentence has been affirmed, how would these CPA fanatics explained their “Jesus” ending?
