South Africa has suspended its diplomatic relations with Rwanda and recalled its envoy from Kigali. The short-lived normalization of relations faltered after South Africa complained of insults flung by the Rwandan government at its international relations and cooperation minister, Lindiwe Sisulu.

A website, reported by Rwandan exiles to be run by the Rwandan government military intelligence, is said to have gone as far as calling Sisulu a “prostitute.”

Rwandan deputy foreign minister is also reported to have tweeted some messages South Africa found offensive. Sisulu suspended the normalization of relations after the “prostitute” insult.

Although Sisulu’s spokesperson has denied the suspension of the normalization of relations between South Africa and Rwanda that was ordered in march by both presidents Cyril Ramaphosa and Paul Kagame, he confirmed that South Africa has recalled George Twala, its high commissioner to Rwanda.
