Tourism: Amsale Gualu, Ethiopian Airlines’ First Female Captain Wins Africa Travel 100 Women Award

Ethiopian Airlines’ first female Captain, Amsale Gualu has won the coveted Africa Travel 100 Award which recognises exceptional women in the travel and tourism sector.

She is the first female pilot to achieve the rank of Captain in the history of Ethiopian Airlines.

Her maiden flight was from Addis Ababa – Gondar-Axum-Addis in October 2010.

She is currently a Captain on B787/777 aircrafts with more than 13,000 hours of flight time.

Captain Amsale Gualu led an all-women functioned flights from Addis Ababa to Bangkok in 2015, to Kigali in 2016, to Lagos in 2017, to Buenos Aires in 2018 and, to Oslo in 2019 and to Washington DC in 2020.

She has operated Fokker-50, Q-400, Boeing 757 and 767 aircrafts.

She holds a BSc in Architecture and urban planning from the Addis Ababa University. She is married and a mother of 3 kids.
