Short-Term Rentals

The Department of Tourism (South Africa) has released a draft Code of Good Practice for Short-Term Rentals for public comment following consultations with industry stakeholders on the sector’s rapid expansion.

Short-term rentals — private homes, apartments and rooms offered to travellers for brief stays via digital platforms or direct bookings — have grown significantly in recent years, widening accommodation options for visitors and creating new income streams for property owners.

However, authorities say the sector’s swift rise has also prompted key concerns around responsible hosting, community impact, guest safety standards and compliance with municipal regulations, particularly as South Africa’s tourism accommodation landscape continues to evolve.

The draft code introduces practical guidelines for hosts, guests and booking platforms, aimed at encouraging responsible participation while maintaining a fair and balanced accommodation ecosystem.

Tourism businesses, stakeholders and members of the public have been invited to review the proposed framework and submit written comments before 12 May 2026.
