Suneka Airstrip

Kenya’s President, William Ruto, has officially broken ground for the upgrade of the Suneka Airstrip, marking a major step toward improving regional air connectivity and strengthening infrastructure in the Gusii region.

The project is expected to enhance accessibility and support economic activities across Kisii County and its environs.

The planned upgrade is also seen as a strategic investment in regional development, with the potential to boost trade, tourism, and business operations. By improving the airstrip’s capacity and facilities, the government aims to position the region as a more attractive destination for investors and travelers alike.

The project will see the transformation of the airstrip through key infrastructure enhancements, including the extension of the runway from 900 metres (gravel) to a 1,050-metre asphalt runway, widening from 15 metres to 18 metres with shoulders, and the development of an apron.

Additional works will include the construction of two taxiways and two turnpads to support safe and efficient aircraft operations.
