The Nigeria Association of Tour Operators (NATOP) is set to host its 8th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Kwara State from July 17th to 20th, 2024. This significant event will include a familiarization tour to some of Kwara State’s most captivating tourist destinations such as Sobi Hills, Unilorin Zoo, Aso Oke Center, and Owu Falls.
Themed “Tourism as a Catalyst for Progress, Peace, and Partnership,” the AGM aims to highlight the transformative power of tourism in fostering economic growth, social harmony, and collaborative efforts. The special guests of honor for the event are Mrs. Lola Ade John, the Federal Minister of Tourism, and Stella Fubara, the Managing Director of Del-York Development Company. Their presence underscores the importance of tourism in Nigeria’s national development agenda.
The event will feature an impressive lineup of guest speakers, including Mr. Bayo Adedeji, Group CEO of WAKANOW, Dr. Kabir Ali Masanwa, Executive Director of Economic Development and Investment at the Katsina State Development Management Board, and Mrs. Uloma Egbuna, CEO of Tour Brokers International Ltd. These industry leaders will share their insights on the current trends and future prospects of the tourism sector. Additionally, a panel session comprising tourism professionals from across the country will provide a platform for in-depth discussions on industry challenges and opportunities which will be moderated by the Organizer of AKWAABA African Travel Market, the Largest Tourism Exhibition in West Africa – Amb Ikechi Uko
In a close meeting with media houses earlier in June, the National President of NATOP Mrs Ime Udo emphasized the association’s commitment to promoting, marketing, and developing strategies to drive tourism. She highlighted the critical role of intentional efforts in various tourist destinations, noting that consistent promotion and development will lead to tangible benefits, including job creation and entrepreneurial opportunities.
“NATOP’s role is to ensure the promotion, market development, and strategic driving of tourism markets into destinations. When there is an intentional effort that is replicated across several places, we will start to see changes, benefits, and dividends of tourism, not just in the creation of jobs but in entrepreneurship,” the National President stated.
She also stressed the importance of harnessing Nigeria’s vast tourism potential to generate income, touching on the diverse aspects of tourism including transportation, health, religion, and education. The President called on the government to recognize tourism as a powerhouse capable of connecting various sectors and creating a multiplier effect on the economy.
“We partner with willing states that are ready to promote tourism in their various areas. Just like we have done in the past, we bring these destinations into the limelight,” She added.
The AGM promises to be a milestone event, bringing together key stakeholders and members of the tour operators association in the tourism industry to chart the future course of tourism in Nigeria. Attendees can look forward to engaging sessions, networking opportunities, and a firsthand experience of Kwara State’s rich cultural and natural heritage.
