Ghana’s tourism sector recorded a strong performance during the 2025/26 period, attracting approximately 1.3 million international visitors and generating an estimated US$4.34 billion in tourism receipts, according to figures cited by ModernGhana.

The reported receipts cover visitor spending across accommodation, restaurants and food services, domestic transportation, entertainment, tours, shopping and tourist attractions. Based on the figures, international visitors spent an average of about US$3,338 per arrival, highlighting the significant economic value of tourism to Ghana.

Industry stakeholders attributed the growth to stronger international promotion of Ghana, diaspora engagement, cultural festivals and major events, increased regional travel and improved air connectivity. Digital campaigns and partnerships involving airlines, tour operators, hospitality businesses and content creators have also helped promote Ghana’s culture, heritage, cuisine, music and natural attractions to international audiences.

Major festivals and events have played an important role in attracting diaspora and international visitors, while increasing intra-African travel is helping Ghana expand beyond its traditional tourism markets in Europe and North America. The tourism gains are also supporting a wide range of businesses and communities, including hotels, restaurants, tour operators, transport providers, artisans, traders and entertainment businesses. However, stakeholders are calling for continued investment in attractions such as Aburi Botanical Gardens, Kakum National Park and Mole National Park, as well as heritage sites, beaches and cultural destinations.

The report notes that improvements in sanitation, roads, visitor information, digital ticketing, security, guided experiences and recreational facilities could encourage visitors to stay longer, explore more destinations and increase their spending within local communities. With tourism generating an estimated US$4.34 billion from 1.3 million international arrivals, attention is increasingly shifting from simply attracting more visitors to maximising visitor value through longer stays, higher spending, repeat visits and stronger local economic participation.
