Rwanda has selected English Premier League club Aston Villa as the flagship partner for its latest tourism promotion campaign in the United Kingdom, describing the move as a strategic investment to strengthen the country’s visibility in one of its most important visitor markets.
The multi-year partnership, unveiled in England by Francesco Calvo, Aston Villa’s President of Business Operations, and Janet Karemera, Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Convention Bureau, makes Visit Rwanda the club’s Principal Partner, Official Tourism Partner and Official Coffee Partner. The agreement is the largest commercial sponsorship in Aston Villa’s history.
According to The New Times, Rwanda chose Aston Villa after evaluating the club’s rapidly expanding global profile, strong fan engagement and growing influence in the English Premier League. Officials believe the partnership provides an ideal platform to showcase Rwanda’s tourism attractions, investment opportunities and premium coffee to millions of football fans across the UK and international markets. The collaboration succeeds Rwanda’s eight-year partnership with Arsenal and reflects the country’s evolving sports marketing strategy. By aligning with Aston Villa, Rwanda aims to deepen its presence in the UK tourism market while reaching new audiences through one of the world’s most-watched football leagues.

The UK remains one of Rwanda’s priority tourism source markets, and officials expect the partnership to increase visitor arrivals by raising awareness of the country’s unique tourism offerings, including mountain gorilla trekking, wildlife safaris, cultural experiences, luxury hospitality and Kigali’s growing reputation as a meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) destination.
Beyond destination marketing, the agreement will also promote Rwanda’s globally recognised coffee industry, giving the country’s coffee producers greater exposure to international consumers through Aston Villa’s commercial platforms and fan engagement activities.
Rwanda has increasingly leveraged high-profile sports partnerships to market itself as a leading African tourism destination. In addition to previous collaborations with Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Atlético Madrid, the country has expanded its sponsorship portfolio into the United States through partnerships with the Los Angeles Clippers of the NBA and the Los Angeles Rams of the NFL.
Tourism remains Rwanda’s largest foreign exchange earner, with the government continuing to invest in innovative destination marketing initiatives to attract high-value visitors, stimulate investment and reinforce the country’s position as one of Africa’s premier tourism destinations.
