Moroccan national airline Royal Air Maroc will from March 15 this year begin direct flights from Ghana to Liberia and Sierra Leone, as it widens its footprints on the continent in line with its Africa Development strategy.
With the new service, travellers from Ghana to the two west-African countries can do so three-times a week on a Boeing 737-700 aircraft with a capacity of 114 seats, without having to do so on a flight via Morocco — confirming Royal Air Maroc’s position as one of the few airlines serving the entire African continent.
According to Imad Ghanmi, the Head of Africa Operations of the airline, the company opted to fly to Liberia and Sierra Leone following requests from governments of the two countries, which incidentally fell in line with the airline’s ambitions.
“We are going into the new intra-Africa markets for Royal Air Maroc, and our ambition is to be the most competitive airline on fares and service quality. We are now opening new routes and increasing flight frequency for people travelling to other parts of the world.
“We have about 80 destinations on our global network and we will add Rio de Janeiro by the end of March this year, and Washington as well. We are working every day to improve our quality of service and destinations at the best rates.
“We are starting this new service of Accra-Monrovia-Freetown flights because we had the support of authorities of these three countries in setting up the service. But our ambition is to open and serve other routes in the intra-Africa markets, starting from Accra and other cities in the sub-region. We are thinking about Conakry and other destinations,” he said.
According to Royal Air Maroc, which has been operating in Ghana for the past decade, the launching fare for the Accra-Monrovia-Freetown route is US$395 tax inclusive.
Mr. Ghanmi noted the competitiveness of Ghana’s aviation sector, saying: “The Ghana market is a very competitive one. We have more than 20 international airlines flying to and from Ghana”.
But Royal Air Maroc is fighting. “We have been here for 10 years and our ambition is to continue growing our services here in Accra, and to have a daily flight service for our customers and, more importantly, for the intra-Africa markets.”
He said Royal Air Maroc intends to support African countries in their economic and tourism endeavours, while meeting the mobility needs of their populations who can appreciate the punctuality of its flights.
