Tourism: WTTC list of the Top 9 most visited countries in Africa in 2022, shows that beaches rank as the most popular attraction

A new List by World Travel and Tourism Council’s (WTTC) latest Economic Impact Report (EIR), has revealed the Top African countries attracting the most tourists, with some surprising results.

According to the business watch.com, Egypt was the most visited country in Africa in 2022 with 11.7 million tourists visiting the country followed by Morocco with 10.9 million tourists. Tunisia was third with 6.437 million tourists while South Africa was fourth with 5.7 million tourists.

Kenya and Tanzania had 1.48 and 1.45 million tourists respectively during the year under review while Rwanda and Mauritius had one million tourists each. Zimbabwe had 895,338 tourists in 2022.
The list of Africa’s most visited countries:
1) Egypt – 11.7 million
2) Morocco – 10.9 million
3) Tunisia – 6.437 million
4) South Africa – 5.7 million
5) Kenya – 1.48 million
6) Tanzania – 1.45 million
7) Rwanda – 1 million
8) Mauritius – 1 million
9) Zimbabwe – 895,338

Egypt is not resting on its Oars. According to Ahmed Issa, Tourism Minister, Egypt is expected to see 28% more tourists to reach up to 15 million.

This came during a meeting headed by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly to follow up the progress made in the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) project, as well as the urban development efforts in the areas surrounding it according to Zawya.com.

This list shows that there are no West African countries in the top level of Countries attracting international Tourists, indicating that the region has some catching up to do when it comes to attracting tourists.

The Surprise name on the list is Rwanda. It is a landlocked country with no Beaches but is known for its conservation efforts, The rise of Rwanda is driven by its Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector, as well as the World famous Gorrilla tracking business.

It’s worth noting that Rwanda and Zimbabwe are the only Countries in the top 9 that does not sell beaches or have access to the Oceans.

Beaches and water are still the top-selling product for African countries.
ZIMBABWE is ranked ninth on the list after receiving nearly 1 million international tourists It has the largest waterfall in Africa, Victoria Falls, which attracts thousands of tourists each year.

Zimbabwe has shown a rebounding tourism industry which took heavy blows from the COVID-19 pandemic travel restrictions.

Contrary to popular belief, Safari is not the top product in Africa, with only Kenya, South Africa and Tanzania having safaris as some of their top-selling product. Instead, beaches remain the most popular attraction for tourists, with coastal countries like Egypt, Morocco, and Mauritius leading the way.

Taking a closer look at the top 9 destinations, Egypt has Sham El Sheikh, a world-class diving resort on Egypt’s Red Sea, while Morocco has Tangier and Casablanca beachfronts. Tunisia has Hammamet, Sousse and Djerba beachfronts, South Africa has Cape Town with the V&A Waterfront and the iconic Table Mountain as its backdrop and extensive views of the ocean, city bowl and mountain peaks Durban Beaches are among the main Draws for South Africa. Diani Beach in Kenya is a long, soft, white, and beautiful beachfront. It is one of the most popular in Africa.

Africa’s tropical paradise and one of the most gorgeous beaches may be found on Tanzania’s Zanzibar Island. Mauritius, an island country in the Indian Ocean is a volcanic island with lagoons and palm-lined beaches, and the majority of the coastline is surrounded by coral reefs.

Another insight from the list shows that luxury tourism is on the rise in Africa, with the Top countries offering high-end accommodations and experiences to cater to affluent travelers. Overall, the List reveals valuable insights into the African tourism .
