Africa: Gambia Highlights Investment Opportunities and Offers Attractive Incentives to Nigerian Investors at Lagos Tourism Forum

The Gambia Tourism Board, in partnership with The Gambia Investment & Export Promotion Agency, TDRP, and the tourism private sector, hosted the Gambia Tourism and Trade Investment Forum in Lagos.

This event marked a significant step in preparing for a high-level tourism and investment mission to Nigeria, aligning with the Gambia’s tourism diversification strategy. The strategy aims to aggressively market in key and lucrative source markets to boost tourist arrivals in the Gambia.

The forum saw participation from various members of the Nigerian tourism industry, including Members of the Nigerian Tour Operators Association, Nigerian Travel Agents, insurance brokers, airlines, and private stakeholders.

During the event, awards were presented to two prominent Nigerians for their contributions to promoting tourism in the Gambia across Africa. Mr. Ikechi Uko, the convener of the Akwaaba African Travel Market, and Otunba Segun Runsewe, the former DG of the National Council for Arts and Culture, were honored. Additionally, two Nigerian airline pilots received awards for their role in the growth of aviation in the Gambia.

Key discussions at the forum revolved around priority investment areas. Participants explored the potential for developing five-star and chain hotels, four and five-star restaurants, and theme and waterpark resorts. The conversation also highlighted the need for religious-friendly hotels and nature-based tourism businesses. Enhancing river transportation and creating marinas and docking facilities were seen as crucial steps. The idea of shopping malls to cater to tourists and locals alike was also discussed.

Another major topic was how the majestic River Gambia can be utilized, from building five-star eco-lodges and expanding river transportation with boats. Sustainable fish farming, aqua farming, and animal husbandry were identified as promising sectors. There was also a focus on biodiversity and wildlife conservation, emphasizing the importance of protecting natural resources while promoting tourism.

The forum outlined several investment incentives for investors, such as free land allocation in tourism development areas with a 5% development levy, long leasing arrangements, SIC certificates, lower tax tariffs, joint marketing ventures, and repatriation of profit and capital. A safe business environment, security, and safety were highlighted as key attractions for investors.

During the lean season, generous discounts will be offered on accommodation and excursions. Discount on hotels who are members of the Gambia Hotel Association (GHA). There will also be a significant discounts on river-based excursions, ground operations, and birding tours, making it an attractive time for tourists and investors alike.

The Gambia’s strategic positioning with sea and airport access, a liberalized market economy, ease of doing business, proximity to major international markets, competitive labor costs, and public-private sector partnership opportunities were all touted as compelling reasons to invest in the country.

Investors were assured of several guarantees, including protection against expropriation, independent valuations, ownership of land, non-interference in business operations, rights to import and export, profit distribution, bank account and fund transfers, and the entry and exit of foreign investors.

The Gambia Tourism and Trade Investment Forum in Lagos highlighted the numerous opportunities for investment in the Gambia’s tourism sector. By fostering a collaborative environment and providing attractive incentives, the Gambia aims to enhance its tourism infrastructure and attract more visitors and investors from Nigeria and beyond.
