The Head of School, Institute of Travel and Tourism of Gambia, Sheikh Ahmed Tejan Nyang, has been listed as one of the winners of the African Travel 100 Global Leaders Award for his remarkable achievement towards the growth of the tourism sector in Africa.
Sheikh Tejan is a household name in the tourism industry in The Gambia. He worked through the ranks in the civil service and rose from Tourism Officer to Director of tourism. His entrance in the hotel industry started in 1973 as a laborer and dish washer at The Atlantic Hotel in Stavanger, Norway.

He subsequently worked as a receptionist, night receptionist manager, disk jockey, assistant night club manager, rooms division manager and general manager.
He worked with one of the biggest Tour Operators in Norway, Saga Tours as a sales consultant before his return to The Gambia. Sheikh Tejan is also founder of West African Tours one of the leading ground operators in The Gambia.
Sheikh Tejan served in various positions in the tourism Industry both locally and regionally. He distinguishes himself as coordinator of The Gambia’s tourism master plan and chairman of ECOWAS Hotel classification committee and served as head of many tourism associations among other. He briefly served with the United Nations as National Coordinator of The International Year of Volunteers.
Sheikh Tejan is a sportsman of excellence. A former table tennis champion, a former team manager of one of Gambia’s first division team, Real De Banjul among others. Last but not least a diehard Man United fan.
