Kenya has taken a significant step toward modernising its tourism ecosystem with the launch of the “Tourist Tap into Kenya” payment application, a digital solution designed to enable seamless, cashless transactions for visitors across the country.
The app was officially unveiled at an event held at JW Marriott Hotel & Residences Nairobi, drawing key stakeholders from government and the private sector. The platform, developed by Kamal Budhabhatti in partnership with Visa and KCB Group, is expected to transform how tourists make payments across Kenya’s hospitality and travel value chain.
The initiative allows visitors to pay for services across hotels, tour operations, national parks, and even remote destinations without relying on cash, significantly improving convenience and security for travelers.
Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, led a high-level delegation at the launch. She was joined by Principal Secretary for Trade, Regina Akoth Ombam; Tourism Secretary, David Gitonga; CEO of the Kenya Association of Tour Operators, Fred Kaigua; Director General of the Kenya Wildlife Service, Erastus Kanga; CEO of the Tourism Regulatory Authority, Norbert Talam; CEO of the Tourism Promotion Fund, Stephen Kinyanjui; and CEO of the Kenya Tourism Awards, Allan Ndekwe, among other stakeholders.
Industry operators have welcomed the innovation as a game-changer for the sector. Notably, Maggie Holidays East Africa was among the tour operators present at the launch, signalling strong private-sector support for the initiative. The company noted that the platform will provide tourists with peace of mind by enabling secure and seamless payments across Kenya, including in remote interior destinations.
Stakeholders say the rollout of the Tourist Tap app underscores Kenya’s commitment to digital transformation in tourism, positioning the country as a forward-looking destination for global travelers.
With the “Magical Kenya” brand continuing to gain traction, the new payment solution is expected to further enhance visitor experience and strengthen Kenya’s competitiveness as a leading tourism hub in Africa.
