HONG KONG

Hong Kong welcomed 31.22 million visitors between January and July 2026, recording a 12 per cent increase compared with the same period last year and strengthening its position as one of the world’s leading tourism destinations.

According to Yahoo News, the strong performance places Hong Kong among the world’s most visited cities, with the destination benefiting from improved international connectivity, expanded aviation capacity and a packed calendar of major events.

Hong Kong’s growth has been supported by its strategic position as a gateway between mainland China and international markets. Its airport is now connected to more than 225 destinations, giving the city extensive access to major tourism source markets across Asia and beyond.

The expansion of Hong Kong International Airport has played an important role in the city’s tourism recovery. Improvements to Terminal 2 have helped attract additional airlines, including low-cost carriers, increasing the number of travel options available to visitors. Greater airline connectivity has also strengthened Hong Kong’s role as an international aviation hub, making it easier for tourists to combine visits to the city with trips to other destinations in the Greater Bay Area and mainland China.

The aviation expansion comes at a time when destinations globally are competing aggressively for international visitors. By increasing air access and improving airport infrastructure, Hong Kong is positioning connectivity as a major component of its tourism strategy. Beyond aviation, major events have become another important pillar of Hong Kong’s tourism strategy. The city hosted more than 130 major events during the first half of 2026, covering business, entertainment, culture, sports and other international activities. These events have helped generate additional visitor demand while encouraging tourists to extend their stays and spend more across the local economy.

Major events are increasingly being used by destinations around the world as a tool for tourism development because they can attract visitors during traditionally quieter periods and create wider economic benefits for hotels, restaurants, transport operators, retailers and attractions. The latest figures highlight the importance of tourism to Hong Kong’s broader service economy. International visitors generate demand across accommodation, food and beverage, shopping, entertainment, transportation and other tourism-related services.

The increase in arrivals also comes as destinations across Asia compete to capture a larger share of the post-pandemic international travel market. Hong Kong’s combination of global connectivity, business infrastructure, shopping, cultural attractions and proximity to mainland China gives it a distinctive advantage. The city is therefore using infrastructure investment, airline connectivity and major events to strengthen its competitiveness and maintain its position among the world’s leading urban tourism destinations.

With more than 31 million visitors recorded in just seven months, Hong Kong’s 2026 performance signals strong momentum for the destination and demonstrates how investment in aviation infrastructure and event tourism can translate into significant international visitor growth.
