On International Nurses Day, healthcare workers across Seychelles are being celebrated for their dedication and resilience, even as calls intensify for better salaries and working conditions to reflect the critical role they play in the nation’s wellbeing.
Lalyans Nouvo Sesel, a new political party led by Alain St Ange, former Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine paid powerful tribute to the nurses of Seychelles – the silent heroes who carry the weight of our nation’s health on their shoulders, day and night.
But praise alone is not enough.
We cannot celebrate nurses while they work in under-resourced hospitals, endure poor conditions, face low pay, and are denied the dignity they deserve. Nurses need more than thanks – they need real change.
We call for:
- Proper recognition of the value of nursing work
- Better salaries that reflect skill, sacrifice and service
- Safer, cleaner workplaces, especially in our hospitals and clinics
- Adequate staffing and resources to reduce burnout and improve care
- More investment in professional development and training
- Empowering nurses is empowering our nation.
- When our nurses thrive, our people are protected.
It’s time for government to get its priorities right – healthcare before stadium toilets.
